Off-Campus Instructional Sites

SACSCOC Off-Campus Instructional Site Information

SACSCOC defines an off-campus instructional site as “a location

  • geographically apart from an institution's sole main campus and
  • where instruction is delivered” (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Substantive Change Policy and Procedures, p. 46).

Off-campus instructional sites offering >=50% of program instruction require SACSCOC approval. Programs offering <50% of program instruction may require a notification to SACSCOC. Note to department heads and program administrators: if you are currently offering or planning to offer credit-bearing instruction at any location other than those in the "SACSCOC-Approved Off-Campus Instructional Sites" list below, please contact our office.

What counts as a program?

For the purpose of an off-campus instructional site (OCIS), a program is defined as “a for-credit credential for which an institution awards a degree, diploma, certificate, or other credential at any level of instruction” (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Substantive Change Policy and Procedures, p. 46).

How do I determine the percentage of a program offered at an OCIS?

To determine the percentage of program instruction that can be earned at an OCIS, we offer the following guidance:

  • Total credit hours required for a program (denominator): include didactic and laboratory hours; do not include clinical or practicum hours.
  • Total credit hours offered at the OCIS for a program (numerator): all didactic and laboratory courses in which a student is required to be at the OCIS to receive instruction (i.e., courses offered face-to-face at the OCIS, distance courses that are only accessible in-person at the OCIS). For hybrid courses, please contact our office for assistance.
